The Priorat is a Spanish region, located in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia.

Geographically, it is located between the Montsant mountain range in the north and the Llabería mountain range and the Santa Marina mountain range, to the south.

The Economy of the region is based on agriculture. Unfortunately the region loses habitants due to the strong focus on agriculture and poor offer on housing options. Nevertheless, it it offers stunning nature and mountains and is a perfect location for a day-trip from Tarragona or a Weekend-trip from Barcelona.

The region’s climate is continental. Dry and hot in summer and cold in winter.

The wine produced in the central sector of the county has the Priorat designation of origin (DOC). It is one of the most appreciated wines in the world. The villages of Lower Priorat produce wine for the Montsant desigation of origin (AOC).

The Priorat terroir is a challenge for the viticulture. Small yields, tight slopes and high terraces. The hard work of the cultivation of this land is rewarded by very high quality wines.

Not only is it hard work to culitivate this land, thre are not many areas where vines can grow making the wines from the region even more limited and selected. The landscapre does not allow a large-scale production, which is why you’ll mainly find family-run wineries in this area.

Many of those family run wineries can be visited. The Priorat region threfore is a must-visit for wine lovers visiting Catalonia.
